Nux i came across this at a friends PC running Stella 6.4. google chrome upon starting gives the following message
Quote:
Google Chrome has stopped updating and no longer supports this version of your operating system.

So does this mean that the future versions of chrome won´t work on Stella? Another glowing example of monopolistic policies of search giant!

Hello,

Yes indeed, Google has outgrown in something that I do not like one bit, but that message per se might be some sort of mistake.
I do have Chrome installed on some PCs and it has continued to get updates. I do not know why they want to stop support for it; the development features they need do exist in EL6 (there's updated GCC & all).

My recommendations to anyone running EL6 however is stick with the stock browser (currently FF 17 ESR).

this is what Jan Wildeboer has to say on the issue
https://plus.google.com/112648813199640203443/posts/7LrVTf43yz8
And guess what before Mr. Jan Wildeboer and others protested Google was dishing out this message
Quote:
"Google Chrome is no longer updating because your operating system is obsolete."

After protests it was changed to
Quote:
Google Chrome has stopped updating and no longer supports this version of your operating system.

Personally i don't use chrome but there will be plenty of users out there who might suffer because of this decision by Google. And indeed if it comes down to that i would urge the chrome users to give firefox and opera a try. I'm damn sure after a week at-most they will forget Chrome. I would also say forget gmail and give a go to https://mail.riseup.net/ and stop googling and start quacking at https://duckduckgo.com/
Cheers!!!

Hi
that's a bit extremist ...( As a never-ever-will chrome/chromium user, opera-rulez, remember that FF too ,sized the development of 64 bit version... )
Now it might be that Nux will agree with you ( he's also very rigid/extremist about certain issues Very Happy ), but let's don't eliminate google for good , as usual, everything is about money, popular distros vs small ones...
Realistic talking centos is server orientated distro, so they just choose ubuntu or other distro over centos, choice made by most of the developers, other distros had do their own packages from source ,(ITC chromium)
if they want google stuff, AFIC chrome is ugly, hard to handle, unhandy interface, and stupid ( plugins,or not is awful , after the last 3 years on opera an all my linux boxes, I can tell you this)
But just because they don't give you centos package of chrome is unfair to affirm that google is "bill gates"-like product, there is a lot of google products that might fill this gap...

Yeah symbianflo may be that was a bit extremist! I don't mind google making money! What i don't like is it has become monopolistic. And monopoly is never good for consumers and users! Search, Mail, and now cellphones, Google's monopoly over these three things is on the verge of being dangerous to the privacy and freedom of users. If more people start using services like duckduckgo and riseupmail the developers will get both motivational and financial support. And in the terms of economics competition is always beneficiary for consumers. Cheers!!!

Okay. As i understand it the devs of Chrome-Chromium are planning to use C++11 and for that they would have to adopt a new toolchain and upgrade to GCC 4.6. So the distros with older versions of C++ libraries will no longer be supported after Chrome 26.
And if the above info is correct there might be a ray of hope,

Yeah, linux developer toolset should help in this situation. Google has no excuse.

Re privacy, I'm waiting for Firefox OS. Smile
