Have just installed Stella 6.6 in old machine with Nvidia FX-5700 video card with 173xx driver that does not support Xorg versions newer than 1.15. Before doing updates how can I pin or hold my existing installed Xorg version 1.15? And is the Nvidia driver performance advantage worth it over just using the Nouveau driver?

Hello,

You can probably add this to your /etc/yum.conf:

exclude=xorg-x11*

(untested)

Re performance, not sure what to tell you. In all likeliness the proprietary driver likely will have better performance and/or power management.

Thanks that worked! However after updates Firefox ver.52.x no longer works where as prior to updates Firefox ver.31.x worked fine. I expected this outcome based on prior distro test runs on this old 32bit machine(Compaq SP750 server) but not sure how to fix. Besides Stella(CentOS) the only other distro that works acceptably on this machine is Debian 7 wheezy, but its end of life is 2018 while Stella 6.x is good until towards end of 2020. Just trying to fix/maximize the life of this computer for a friend.

Can you try to see whether it might be an extension or something that makes Firefox unusable? Try creating a new profile or start it in safe mode.
firefox --safe-mode

Thanks for your response, I ran the suggested command firefox --safe-mode and also ran it as root and got the following response:

Does the problem go away if you move your mozilla dir, i.e. start fresh?

- close firefox

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.old

- start firefox

2 wild guesses:

- are you by any chance running firefox as a different user/id than the one logged in the user interface?

- can you temporarily remove flash-plugin package, restart ff and see if it make any difference?
