Sad I've just completed remastering Stella 6.5, using an adaptation
of Nux's standard kickstart file in the same manner as I previously
remastered Stella 6.3 and Stella 6.4.

When trying to install it to a hard drive, the "liveinst" program
generates a prompt for a root password, and I can't find an
acceptable entry. I tried the password that I used for root when
I installed the fresh Stella 6.5 .iso to a hard drive, also, some
of the obvious choices, "root", "live", "custom", or simply hitting
return with no entry. None of these worked.

Confused again ???????

Hi,

Yes, that's weird and haven't had time to actually dig in and see what changes happened in 6.5 that triggered this issue.
It is easily worked-around though, search for this:
/usr/bin/passwd -d $LIVECD_USER > /dev/null

and remove the root password by adding a similar line:
/usr/bin/passwd -d root > /dev/null

Crying or Very Sad Hi, Nux !

I followed your prescription but it didn't solve the problem.

I searched the kickstart file for the line you mentioned, and
inserted the new line immediately after it.

I reran livecd-creator and produced a new .iso.
When I tried to install it to the hard drive, I again got
the prompt for a root password.

(I use USBInstaller rather than UNetbootin to generate a
bootable USB from the .iso file, but I've never had any
issues with it).

Still confused ????

Smile Finally, some good news !

I've managed to find a work-around for the root password problem.
Stepwise, it is as follows:

-immediately after starting to boot from the remastered USB, hit the ESC
key to show the options
-select the boot from command line option, and enter the Tab key to show
the boot command line
-the last character in the command line is a "3" to indicate a runlevel of 3;
change it to a "1" --> a runlevel of 1 is single-user mode.
-hit Enter, and a root-level command line prompt appears.
-enter "passwd", and prompts will come up in sequence to enter a new
password value twice.
-after the password has been reset, enter "init 5", which will start up
the normal graphics mode screen sequence
-carry on with the normal sequence, and when the "install to hard drive"
selection prompts for a root password, the new, reset value can be used.

Len,

You're doing something wrong then, I have already hit this problem previously and solved it, see here:
https://forums.nux.ro/index.php?t=msg&th=280&start=0 &

There's also a workaround mentioned which seems a bit easier..

Shocked Hi Nux.

I'm wondering if there is any significant difference between the situation
you solved, with the original Stella 6.5 .iso, and what might come up
with a custom .iso remastered with your kickstart file.

I did use tne NON-PAE version 2 of Stella 6.5 as made available on Dec. 2,
and had no problem with the original installation.

I've just tried your simpler workaround for the root password problem,
consisting of cntrl+alt+t followed by sudo passwd -d root, but I'm
stymied because I'm prompted for my user password, and because I'm
not in the sudoers file, the operation isn't allowed.

The only other peculiarity I can think of in my customization is that
even though I downloaded the NON-PAE version, I've stayed with the older
2.6.32-431 kernel rather than using the newer 3.12.2-1 kernel.

I do hope I'm clarifying matters rather than clouding the issue further.

Len,

The kernel should not matter AFAIK.
In Stella's case the sudo issue is dealt with by the stella-gnome-settings package which creates a file in /etc/sudoers.d/, check the SRPM:
http://li.nux.ro/download/stella/6/SRPMS/stella-settings-gno me-0.1-9.el6.nux.src.rpm

However this does not apply to the LiveCD though, the CentOS defaults provide the livecd user with sudo rights. Are you changing the default user?

Here's my current ks if you need it:

Sad Hi Nux: Just an update on my current progress, or lack thereof.

I've downloaded your latest kickstart file, added my package additions to
it, and am trying to remaster with livecd-creator again to determine if
the root password problems go away.

I can't get the livecd-creator run to complete successfully. I've had
3 failures with the following message appearing after the last rpm (zlib)
has been downloaded:

/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/imgcreate/errors.py;45:
DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6
return unicode(self.message)
Error creating LiveCD: Unable to download from repo:
Package Header sed-4.2.1-10.el6.i686 <------- first instance, RPM cannot open
gutenprint-cups-5.2.5.el6.i686 <------- second instance, RPM cannot open
patch-2.6-6.el6.i686 <------- third instance, RPM cannot open

There was also a 4th failure where the /lib/modules/2.6.32-431.el6.i686/kernel/ could not be unpacked.

In each case, a sudo yum list package-name command works fine.

***********************

Given the sporadic nature of the failures, I suspect my internet connection has become erratic.
If/when I achieve a successful run, I'l comment further.

After a full system update to EL 6.5 and a reboot, livecd-creator consistently dies on me with:
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/imgcreate/errors.py:45: DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6
return unicode(self.message)

I'll see if I can find a way around it.

Shocked Hi, Nux: Some limited progress:

By using a large disk partition, I was able to complete a livecd-creator run
using my adaptation of your latest kickstart file.

My previous failed runs were done in a disk partition between 13GB and 16GB in size.
On this latest run, I used a partition of 50GB. Based on this experience, I "know"
that 16GB is not enough, and 50GB is, but I don't know what the allowable minimun is.

Unfortunately, the root password problem has not gone away. I still need to resort to
the single-user-mode procedure describe previously to effect a hard-disk install.

Hi,

Can you paste your kickstart somewhere? The "passwd -d root" thingy must work.

Rolling Eyes Hi Nux: I've attached my kickstart file for reference.

A contributing factor to problems being encountered is the difference in the
way a fresh Stella 6.5 boots up compared to how a remastered version comes up.

The standard Stella comes up allowing an automatic login for the default user,
centoslive.
A remastered version comes up immediately presenting the standard installation
sequence of Welcome, License Information, Create User, Date and Time, and Kdump.
This forces the creation of a regular user in the Create User step, and after
Kdump is finished, the login prompt shows the reguler user as a default.
I haven't been able to get any other login accounts to be acceptable. I tried
root, centoslive, livecd, and LiveCD accounts with various password choices, none
of which have worked. This is why I haven't been able to get off the ground
with the passwd -d root aoproach. The only way I've been able to get through it
is with the single-user-mode aoproach.

Len,

I suggest you start over from my ks and step by step add your modifications and test.
What are you trying to achieve in your case?

Confused Hi Nux:

In my post under Howto's, tips, and tricks last January 20, message # 888,
entitled "Remastering Stella 6.3 with livecd-tools(livecd-creator), I
described in detail the construction of what I was after in a remastered Stella.

My latest attempts this month are simply directed at utilizing the latest Stella (6.5),
and your latest kickstart file that you just posted.

To my own satisfaction, I've managed to overcome the two issues that seemed to get in the
way:
-Root password for hard drive install, overcome (perhaps in an overly-complicated way),
with the single-user approach for presetting the administrative password.
-Livecd-creator run failures, overcome by using an overly-large disk partition for
remastering.

Pending further expert advice from you, I don't plan any further activities on this subject
at this time.

Hi,

I'll need to find some time and run a build against your ks and see what goes wrong, not sure when this will happen though with holidays coming etc. Smile

Smile Hi Nux: I've just sent you a separate e-mail dealing with the
contents of the local repo which is part of the kickstart file.

Good luck, and have a good holiday season !!

For Stella 6.6, both of the problems described herein (root password,
overly-large partition requirement) have been overcome by using
Nux's latest kickstart file, url:
