In the past the default was Gnome 2, now it should be Gnome 3. I would like to see two live-DVD version: Gnome-liveDVD and KDE-liveDVD. Is it possible?

I wish XFce be included in the repos for Stella 7 Very Happy
It would be fine also gnome fallback with compiz Rolling Eyes
Gnome-shell is just unusable for everyday office use Sad
Ciao

Xfce is a light, fast, smart and complete DE. An XFCE spin could make Stella even more competitive.

XFCE, MATE
or
KDE (my favorite for desktop use, but the most heavy one, maybe not the best to work)

That would be the way to go for me.
Gnome 3 for working? No, thanks, I'd spend more time changing Apps and desktops than watching kitty videos on the internet while I should be working.

No need to scramble for alternate DEs quite yet (unless you really have to have version 7).
There will be Gnome2 for the next 5 plus years. Centos will provide "full updates" until 2017 and "maintenance updates" until the end of Nov, 2020 (version 6.5).

If Stella follows suit then we Gnomers are lookin' good. Cool I'll trust Nux to do what's best for us when he finds time.

Hi,

I am unsure if there will be Stella 7 (need to find some time for it); but it's likely it will use the Gnome3 Classic layout.
I have used MATE for a while and while it is indeed very familiar territory it's just not quite Gnome2.

I have found Gnome3 with Classic layout (the RHEL/CentOS default) to be acceptable for office/work use with small tweaks.

Am I correct in assuming that you will continue to maintain Stella 6.x and that there will be updates to the Stella and nux-desktop packages as needed?

Actually, in that regard, I'd welcome any help from the users in the form of update requests. As my attention will shift to EL7, I will have less chances to observe issues with EL6 (though I do not expect too many).

I`m still lovin Gnome 2 and with Stella it`s already perfect for me.
The only DE which may be usable in the same way is Mate.
Till 2020 it`s a long time I can use Gnome 2 and I will do it.
Someday I hope there will be a Stella with Mate. Smile

Though I'm not a great KDE4 fan, I found KDE 4.10 is quite usable. Can we expect Stella 7 defaults to KDE 4.10?

Hi,

Yes, KDE4 is surprisingly usable, but I think it's too much of a "paradigm shift" from what we have learned to expect from (RH)EL.
The kind of people who would use Stella might not like it; KDE4 is still a "yum install" away.

Yes, I am also used to it myself, except for the fact it drives my laptop's FAN like crazy.

I wonder, Nux, if there is a power management thing that is missing. I had a similar issue on my old MacBook. Someone somewhere (guessing either Red Hat or Intel) fixed it somewhere around F12 or so, becuase starting whith RHEL 6 or so, and the aforementioned Fedora, the fans worked all the time mostly, but never revving to max periodically. Just a nice steady blow of air, jacking up whenever I ran something of the day like Minecraft or whatnot (think the wep cracker was the worst).

Just a thought.

I worked with Gnome 3 and Mate, but now Mate is my first choice, because it`s like Gnome 2 and Gnome 2 is or was the best DE Linux ever had. Very Happy
I think Mate is a very good choice for Stella 7. Smile
