A request for fsarchiver.

This is a good one for cloneing and restoring a partition (not the one you are running on). A lot easier to use than Clonzilla.

Hi ongoto,
fsarchiver and Clonzilla are a very good choice, but not in case of xfs/LVM.
I`ve tested it with ext4 and it works fast.
I`ve tested it with xfs/LVM and it works..........very slow, waiting some hours.
Do you have an idea what is better to use for xfs/LVM ??
I`m searching for.

@ detipco

I don't know too much about XFS or LVM. I understand there are commands to save a snapshot of the volume, but I don't know how that works with another backup applications. You could do a check here

NTFS partitions are another weakness of fsarchiver. It's better to us Clonezilla on those system types.

I see they provide RPMs for EL6 and 7, don't they work? (I'll try to build it anyway).

@ Nux

The el6 package from sourceforge installs ok on my rig.
It's just more fun if the packages have the nux name on them. Smile

@ ongoto
Thanks for that interesting link. Smile

I will try now the new version 2014 of CloneZilla. I`ve tested it with my older version and got problems.

If you are using BTRFS then have a look at
http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/767683-how-to-create-an d-manage-btrfs-snapshots-and-rollbacks-on-linux-part-2
https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Incremental_Backup

It's pretty cool.

Also check Thin LVM, much more efficient space usage and snapshotting.

Yeah, thanks a lot for all your suggestions. Smile

I`ve now tested the latest CloneZilla and it works with LVM 2. (CentOS uses LVM 2)
That`s okay for me.

@ Nux

Thanks for the fsarchiver package. It is working great with the latest version of Stella (6.5), and that's where I'll be for the next few years. Smile

I noticed duplicity in the repo. There is a lot to be said for encrypted backups. Nobody is going to get or see your data. Too bad it doesn't have a restore function.

Look at thin lvm on top of luks if you want snapshots and encryption.
Also you might like tarsnap.
