Hi, all!

There is little Howto for installing Google Chrome at RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux/Oracle Linux 6

For now 64-bit only.

1. Download the dependencies package:http:// letitbit.net/download/26860.24645bd933801167501a5dac7ee9/chr ome-deps-stable-2.10-1.x86_64.rpm.html

2. Install the package with yum localinstall chrome-deps-stable-2.10-1.x86_64.rpm
3. Go to Google's website and install Chrome.
4. Enjoy!

I have placed file at letitbit, because there is file length limit at forum... The size is 3.5 MB.
The package is created at 64-bit Centos 6 with script provided by Richard K. Lloyd according to http://chrome.richardlloyd.org.uk/ .
Installing this pre-built package may be easier, than running script, and does not require anything other to install.

Is this RPM overwriting any Base files? I think people should be aware if it does that.

A better solution might be running Chromium from here:
http://install.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/yum/itecs/public/chromium/ rhel6/x86_64/?C=M;O=D

No, this rpm does not overwrite anything except of google-chrome start scripts. It provides needed libraries from newer glibc,libstdc++ (Fedora 15-17), places them into /opt/google/chrome/lib and sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH for chrome start script to this directory. Chrome works excellent (see http://chrome.richardlloyd.org.uk/). I use chrome myself this way more than a year Smile

about Chromium: the first attempt after Google had finished support of EL6 was made by CentOS people (https://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=680#p4559). But updates of that do not reflect all security issues... Seems, that author have lost interest to it Sad

And I have proposed a way to install original genuine Smile

Chrome from Google's original repository and it will be updated from Google...

And further few words about Chromium: what about flash player plugin and libpdf, available only for Google's product?

Hi constantin,

Here is a link step by step to install Chromium and Flash player plugin & PDF from 'ncsu.edu' repo; it is for Centos 6.6. This link Updated: Dec 17, 2014.

I am not a fan at all of Google Chrome or Chromium or any thing from Google or use Google code (more or less). but while ago I installed because Firefox didn't work on a website. I haven't tried yet on my currently running systems Stella 6.6 or Centos 7.

Hope this help.

SIDE NOTE: for Browser security, in my knowledge no Browser will ever provides full security, and bad guys are always one step ahead. in Stella I use Proxomitron (with wine) and in Centos 7 Noscript. I couldn't install Proxomitron in centos 7 because couldn't install 32bits wine. Proxomitron is 12 years old privacy/security software but still second to none for me in my 11 yeasrs of use. I am not suggesting anything with 'Side Note', just a point to share.

Hi, Edge.

Chromium package does NOT provide PPAPI flash plugin and does not support NPAPI one. To install Pepper Flash in Chromium, the user must extract it from Chrome package Smile

It seems, that installation of Chrome itself with 3 steps is much easier, especially for beginners Smile

(Yes, I'm working on deployment of Linux workstations and I can imagine, how is to tell to all clients to upgrade Flash Plugin, for example Smile

)

I have nothing against adding it to dextop repo, but rpm is built from other 5-6 rpms from Fedora repo with Richard K. Lloyd's script (see http://chrome.richardlloyd.org.uk/), not from srpm.
Running the script is very good for one machine, but installing/updating of resulting rpm is better for mass deployment.
