Hello,

Yesterday evening, I did an update before shutting down wife' computer.
I do update at regular basis.
Today, no luck, boot start but stop before starting GUI: black screen, steady cursor and keyboard/mouse inactive.

I tried previous kernel, nothing better.
I removed "rhgb" and "quiet" in the grub line. All is green but I can't read details.

Computer is HP DC5750 ADM64 with NVidia video card.
I don't remember Stella version, 6.5 or up.

I noticed video driver update yesterday. Is it the culprit?

Could someone help me to fix that?
Many thanks

Hello,

Try to boot in text mode (add "3" to kernel cmd line in grub), then install nvidia-detect from ElRepo and run it, it will tell you which package you need to install for your card.
Let me know how it goes.

I didn't expect a so early answer.
Thanks.

I installed and run nvidia-detect
I got something like:
...
NVIDIA devices...
GT215 [GeForce GT 240]
This device requires the legacy 340.xx NVIDIA driver kmod-nvidia-340xx
WARNING: Xorg log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log does not exist
WARNING: Unable to determine Xorg ABI compatibility
WARNING: The driver for this device does not support the current Xorg version

Is it possible to go back to the previous driver? How?
If not, I don't remember how to install the driver, any idea?
What about the 3 WARNING?

So have you installed kmod-nvidia-340xx as advised by nvidia-detect?
Also remove your current kmod-nvidia, obviously.

I removed kmod-nvidia-346-.35-1...,
installed kmod-nvidia-340xx...,
rebooted
Very Happy Very Happy
GUI is back

driver is 340.65
Now I need to know how to avoid a new bad update.
Do I need to check all the packages before updating?
Is there a way to keep the 340xx driver, just updating the 340.version?

Anyway thank a million for your help; wife is happy.

I think you are now stuck with that version of nvidia.
If you try a "yum update" does it offer to update it? If not, you're set.

yum update proposed nvidia driver to 340.76-1.
Updated and reboot.

Everything is OK. I'll keep an eye on the future updates to be sure.
Anyway I have the process to recover now.

Thanks again.
